The Opening of Trinity Leeds

On Thursday Trinity Leeds finally shrugged off the dust sheets after 3 long years of construction and was ready to begin trading. The doors were about to be opened to the queuing public with a grand opening in place to mark the occasion.

Armed with my press pass and fellow blogger chums, Lil and Jen, we headed into the new centre to see what it was all about.

With Jen becoming more attached to her pink ‘Press’ vest by the second, we took advantage of the empty walkways to take a look around the centre before all the eager Leodians piled in, ready to spend their cash. Finished to a high spec and littered with big names, Trinity Leeds is set to raise the city’s profile as a retail destination and pull in visitors from neighbouring cities. With a glass atrium sitting above the shops, it was bright and certainly breezy. I was so cold at one point, I think I may have temporarily lost the will to live.

After a wander around to warm up, a considerable amount of time admiring the Victoria’s Secret video wall (those women are superhuman) and some Lego building, we went to visit our friends from Hebe Media and Rabbit Hole who have their very own shop in the centre.

Made in Leeds aims to showcase products and services that are designed and made in Leeds City Region and is a great little independent nestled between the high street giants. With prints, rails of clothing, jewellery and other goodies to be had, it’s well worth a visit. Lil bought a beautiful necklace by Gem Smith and I showed my support by purchasing a Made in Leeds tote bag. If you’re a Leeds resident and haven’t yet had a chance to read the latest newspaper, The City Talking, you can pick one up here too.

After saying hello and sending our best wishes, we decided to set up camp on the first floor and patiently wait to find out what was in the box…

As the countdown ended, former Cirque Du Soleil principal artist Colette Morrow rose from the box, tumbling and climbing her way around some flimsy looking aerial silks. She was, of course, amazing but there’s no way you’d get me up there. No way. She disappeared back into her box and after a bit of dancing around to Florence (some dancers, not her. There’s only so much one woman can do), she rose again for the big finale wearing the world’s longest dress measuring at 15m, designed by Henry Holland.

Ok, time for honesty. Whilst it was a nice idea and I understand the premise – get a high profile designer to create a record breaking dress that will create a spectacle – it just didn’t come off for me. Yes it was very long, yes she looked like a beautiful lady sat on top of toilet roll, but the design was just a little, uninspiring. I normally love Henry Holland’s stuff (Nicola Roberts in that beautiful multi-coloured crochet dress comes to mind), but it just felt a bit ‘meh’, which, and I’m taking a stab in the dark at this, probably wasn’t the reaction he was aiming for.

‘Grand’ opening aside, I recommend you pay Trinity Leeds a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. Full of lots of high street goodies, amazing restaurants, bars, an Everyman cinema and even a little independent, it’ll be a great day out.
